This circular trail features a unique landscape of parallel rampart-type sand dunes and grassy swamps among the dunes. The 3.5 km trail leads through a landscape that is unique in Europe and emerged some 6,000 years ago as the sea was receding. This landscape offers evidence of the geological history of the Baltic Sea. There is a high-type swamp (the Pēterzers swamp), along with remnants of an old narrow-gauge railway. Wooden pathways have been installed along the swamp and the surrounding wetlands.

Because this circular trail is in a nature zone, it may only be traversed in the company of a guide from the Slītere Nature Park. A steep stairway that has been installed along the ancient shores of what was once a Baltic lake of ice will lead the visitor to a completely different world, one with fallen trees, broadleaf forests, an area in which underground streams create aboveground wetlands, a limy and grassy swamp (all of these are protected areas), remains of old-time reclamation ditches, and rotting fir stumps which are important in terms of the diversity of species and which have been in the region since a major windstorm in 1969. The trail is 1.2 km long and will take an hour to an hour-and-a-half to traverse. The trail begins at the Slītere lighthouse, where the SNP visitors’ centre is located (in tourist season).

This is the second thickest tree in Latvia and the Baltic States. There is a large and open hole in the trunk of the tree. Like most trees of its size, it has suffered lightning damage. The tree is a wonderful part of the landscape, and a little wooden fence has been put up around it.

This may be an ancient cult object, and today it is a little hill in the dunes that is a bit larger than other local hills.  It is said that a church once sank into the dune.  This tale suggests that there was a Christian or pagan prayer place here at one time. (Source: Roja TIC)

In Aizkraukle, drive down Enerģētiķu Street to the Selonian side (there will be small “pockets” at the side of the road) to see one of the best views of the Daugava River valley, reminding us of what this fateful river was like before the power plant was built. You will see that the river has eroded the steep cliffs on the right bank. The further part of the valley is part of the Daugava Nature Park.

Atrodas Viļānu dienviddaļā, Maltas upītes krastos, kuras tecējumu pārtrauc Viļānu HES. Par muižu atrodamas ziņas jau no 15. gs. beigām, kad tā piederēja bruņiniekam J. Loem. The first church in Piņķi was made of wood.  The idea of building a new church emerged in the 1850s, and the cornerstone for a design by the architect J.D. Felsco was laid on May 25, 1872.  The church that is there today was completed in 1874.  The nine-register organ was built by the distinguished organ builder Wilhelm Sauer in 1890.  On July 17, 1916, the 5th Latvian Riflemen’s Battalion was on its way to the front lines at Smārde and stopped at the Piņķi Estate.  Col Jukums Vācietis delivered a sermon at the church on that date (though not all historians agree that he did so), and that has gone down in history as one of the most important events of the day.  The historical even inspired Aleksandrs Čaks to write the poem “Sermon at the Piņķi Church.”  The church is a cultural monument and can be toured.  It is lit up at night.  Alongside the stone is a rock that was installed in commemoration of the Latvian riflemen.
