Kurzeme-Mazjura coastline: Jurmala-Cape Kolka

Practical information

Total distance walking 137 km

Recommended season:  June-August.  Bērzciems, Lake Engure, Mērsrags Jomiņš, Kaltene coast, Cape Kolka – also on lively spring or autumn days, as well as during bird migration season.
Length:  ~140 km (along the coast, not including local nature trails and trips to villages).
Level of difficulty:  Medium
Road cover:  Mostly sandy beaches, with small pebbles and gravel.  The coastline between Bērzciems and Mērsrags and between Kaltene and Roja is fairly heavily overgrown with reeds and other plants.  Between Kaltene and Roja the coast has larger rocks.
Start:  Jūrmala (Dzintari or Majori)
End:  Cape Kolka (the ruins of the old Kolka lighthouse on the shore and the Kolka lighthouse out in the sea)
Route:  Jūrmala-Ragaciems-Engure-Bērzciems-Mērsrags-Roja-Cape Kolka
Distance from Rīga:  Start – 20 km, end – 150 km.
Logistics:  Jūrmala is easily reached by bus or train, and there is a bus between Rīga and Kolka several times a day.
Alternatives:  You can continue your hike to Ventspils (+85 km) or merge this route with the third one (Ventspils-Liepāja, +120 km).  The Irbe River must be crossed on the P 124 bridges.  The route can also begin in Engure, Mērsrags or Roja.
Note:  There is a bridge along the lower reaches of the little Starpiņupīte River.  Please walk around the ports at Engure, Mērsrags and Roja.  During low water season, most of the little rivers can be crossed on foot.
Points of interest:  Lapmežciems fishing centre, Ragaciems lighthouse, Plieņciems dune, overgrown Bērzciems shore (birds), Lake Engure (local route to orchid trail), Mērsrags Jomiņš, Mērsrags lighthouse, Kaltene bird watching trail, Kaltene rocky coastline, Kaltene devil’s stone ridges (local route), Pūrciems white dune trail, Ēvaži nature trail, Cape Kolka.
