This is the widest water fall in Latvia – 249 metres wide and up to 1.75 metres high. This is an interesting natural, cultural and historical object in that it is linked to various events and legends. Duke Jacob of Courland invented equipment to catch fish. It was fastened to the cliffs of the waterfall, and this created the tale of a city where salmon and other fish who were leaping across the waterfall fell into the nets and were thus caught in the air. During Jacob’s rule, there was talk about digging a canal around the waterfall to ensure shipping, and work began on the project. During the early 18th century there was the idea that the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea could be connected via the Venta, Nemuna and Dnieper rivers. Turkish prisoners of war continued to dig the canal, but the local dolomite cliffs were a problem. Attempts to blow up the cliffs led to damage to nearby buildings, so the work ended. The impressive ditch can still be seen today. In 2012, a wooden pathway was installed on the right bank of the Venta to offer a good look at the waterfall. It is worth visiting here during various seasons of the year, when different types of fish migrate. |

The mouth of the most beautiful river of Vidzeme. On the seashore between the mouths of River Gauja and River Daugava, one of the largest dune ranges in Latvia with distinctive parabolic dunes overgrown with forest (wooded dunes) is situated. The Mouth of River Gauja is unique as it is one of the few major rivers in Latvia and in EU countries to flow into the sea naturally. There is no harbour or other hydro-engineering construction. It is a popular recreation area in the vicinity of Riga and Saulkrasti while, unfortunately, the lack of infrastructure makes it suffer from anthropogenic load. Not far from the rivermouth, hidden in dunes, there are pillboxes which were built in 1920 or 30ies as anti-airborne barriers. There was a whole range of them along the coastline from the mouth of the River Lielupe to the mouth of the River Gauja forming a part of the Daugavgrīva Fortress fortifications. The pillbox is made of concrete, ca 1.5m thick. Every year, on the 3rd Sunday in August, a lamprey festival takes place in Carnikava town by the Gauja rivermouth. Carnikava is called the Lamprey Capital as it is famous for its lamprey fishing tradition and generous catches. Nature restricted area has been established in old and overgrowing gravel pit and where rare species in Latvia - Natterjack toad (Bufo calamita) can be found. Natterjack toad needs open sand – gravel area therefore the population of it is decreasing once gravel pit is overgrowing by bushes. The population of this amphibian is depending on the activity of people in the area. There is very little chance to find Natterjack toad just by entering the restricted area, therefore please respect this area as especially sensitive.

The wetland meadows that are around the Pededze River are the site of this 200 ha farm with some 350 red deer, other deer and wild boar. There are towers from which you can watch the graceful animals, and there are ponds for commercial fishing. Please contact the owner well in advance for a tour. |

There are several buildings from the estate that survive to the present day and were built by the Plater dynasty of noblemen. The old mansion that is on the side of the Count Plater Street was built in 1759 on the banks of the Jāņupīte River. The Baroque building was designed by an architect from Venice, Antonio Parazzo. Later the mansion was rebuilt, and after a new castle was erected, the Plater family spent its summers on the first floor of the old building. The second and third floors had a library with some 20,000 books. The noblemen managed to move most of the contents of the library to safer locations during World War I, when the library as such was destroyed. Work on the new castle of the Krāslava Estate (on the upper part of the Daugava River Valley) began in 1756 (architect Domenico Parazzo). Initially it was in the Baroque style, but reconstruction at the turn of the 18th century involved Classicism. Unique Rococo wall paintings with views of Rome have been discovered in the building. These were based on samples from castles in Poland and were painted during the 1760s and 1770. A high school used the new castle until the 1970s. Then the building was abandoned and gradually turned into a ruin. More recently there has been major renovation of the castle’s façade, and it now has a good appearance. Surrounding the structure is a romantic landscape park that dates back to the mid-18th century. It is on the hillocks of the Daugava River Valley and the valleys that cross it. An artificial grotto has been restored, and a statue of a lion stands guard over the site. The stairway has been placed in its historical location, and the park features pathways and a yard. |
