The great Black Plague rock, which has engraved text that can still be seen
to a certain extent – it tells future generations about the local pastor who died
from the plague, about how the parsonage was established at Sīkrags and then
moved to Mazirbe. The rock is also a monument to six pastors of the nearby
congregations. All the three stones tell about the horrors of the Black Plague in
1710, the texts have been engraved during the parson Peterson in 1711-1734.

The estate of 12 buildings and a park has survived almost completely to this very day. The main building of the estate was erected on a largish oval island in the 1840s, and it has a moat all around it. This was meant to resemble fortified Medieval castles. The mansion is currently home to the local parish government, library and post office. Visitors can take a tour of the estate and its surroundings. There are stories about the estate to say that the baron had a beautiful daughter who, like the Rose of Turaida, refused to obey her father's instructions. If you enjoy an active lifestyle, this tour is the perfect way to enjoy the culinary heritage hidden in Gauja National Park. The cycling route starts from Strenči and first passes two local breweries at Brenguļi and Valmiermuiža with nice cafés and good beer. On the way to Valmiera you will also stop at Trikāta Village to taste locally made chocolate. From Valmiera, the route goes through a beautiful forest to Cēsis with its charming medieval Old Town. In Cēsis you will visit the local bakery and distillery to taste their production. Also, you will see what a herb and species garden looked like in medieval times. You’ll experience a canoeing trip from Cēsis to Līgatne, one of the nicest parts on the River Gauja with its sandstone banks, remote farmsteads and old-fashioned water-powered ferry. The historic centre of Līgatne Town is linked with the development of its paper mill. Here you can also visit local wine and handicraft producers in one of the artificial caves typical of the area. Cycling the hilly, winding roads of Sigulda, you’ll see Turaida and Sigulda medieval castles, Gūtmaņala Cave and other picturesque views. In Sigulda you will enjoy Latvian traditional meals in the restaurants ”Bucefāls”, ”Aparjods”, and will taste 80 kinds of jam in the Mauriņi guest house. |

Based on the tower of a former Soviet army radar installation, there is an 18-metre viewing tower at the Southern breakwater of Ventspils (Medņu Street) today. The tower offers a good view of the port territory, with the sea gate at the mouth of the Venta River and the city beach. Binoculars are available at the tower. It is worth walking down the Southern breakwater to get a better look at the sea.

This is the only place in the Baltic States where there is such a vast territory of open-air sand dunes which still change the local terrain very actively because of the wind. The only Sea Museum and Dolphinarium in the Baltic States can be found here.

The Lake Lubāns, wetland of Lubāns. Lubāns (80.7 km2) is the largest lake in Latvia and the most popular
lake and wetland in Europe. The lake and the wetland has biodiversity; a unique place not only in Latvia,
but also internationally. Nature Reserve is included in the European Union network of protected areas and
NATURA 2000 under the Ramsar Convention criteria as the wetland of international importance. Lubāns wetland,
called marshy meadows, includes bogs, wet meadows and wet forests. In autumn and spring the lake
attracts thousands of migratory waterfowl which is easily to wach from the bird observation towers or the terrace
of water tourism development center.

On this tour you will enjoy the diversity of nature in Lahemaa National Park – the oldest national park in the Baltic states. Lahemaa – means “the land of bays” in Estonian. It is characterised by many bays, peninsulas, forests and villages rich in cultural heritage. The Forest Trail will go along the bays and peninsulas of Lahemaa National Park, introducing the hikers to its most significant natural and cultural heritage. The forests are rich with blueberries and mushrooms in autumn, and the air is very clean. You will start the tour from Tallinn, going by bus to Lahemaa National Park, where you stay overnight in one of the beautiful manors. On the next day you will hike till Oandu. En route you will see Altja – a scenic traditional fishing village, where a traditional Estonian tavern is located and you can enjoy traditional meals. In Oandu there is the visitor centre of the Estonian State Forest Management (RMK), where hikers can learn more about forest habitat types and forest management traditions. Then you will reach Käsmu Peninsula with its wooded dunes and moss-covered rock fields, giving the feeling of being in a fairy tale. Käsmu is also a popular Estonian sea captains´ village. There you can visit the Marine Museum and lighthouse, as well as have an extra walk to the Vana-Jüri rocks. During the day from Käsmu to Kasispea you will see some of the most impressive boulders in Lahemaa National Park, the Tammispea and Jaani-Tooma boulders, which resemble huge monoliths. You will end the tour in Viinistu Village, where we suggest visiting Viinistu Art Museum. |

The late 19th C saw an increase in the development of dairy products in Estonia. The Dairy Museum was established in 1976 to preserve, research and exhibit the history of dairy production. Collections are exhibited both indoors and outdoors, our programmes are very popular and guided tours for groups are available on request. Estonian Dairy Museum tells guests about making dairy products at home, displays and exhibitions on dairy history are also available here. The museum also organises sweet cheese snack, cheese, ice-cream and butter making masterclasses. |

This is a large set of coastal meadows, ancient rivers and areas of reeds. It is found at a location where the Daugava River used to flow – between Vecmīlgrāvis and Vecāķi. There are inland dune meadows here, complete with the very rare silver grass. Vecdaugava is an important location for nesting birds and several uncommon plant species. On the southern end of the Vecdaugava peninsula, at a place called Skanstnieki, one can find remnants of medieval Swedish fortifications. The Vecdaugava Regional Research and Fishing Museum is here, as well.

The tower of St Catharine’s Church in Valka opens up a view of the “twin towns” of Valka in Latvia and Valga in Estonia. You can see the former border crossing, the St John’s Lutheran Church of Valga, and a shop in Valga which is visited by many Latvian residents. This is part of the ZBR.

Kirkas Hill in Micāni. In 1792, a small castle on the hill Priežukalns (Kirkas kalns) was rebuilt into
Lutheran Church. Nowadays, the hill still is called Kirkas kalns (in German „Kirche” means „church”).
Old people say – under the church there is a big cellar where the jewellery of church and the Mantefel
family is hidden; Manteifel family vault is there too.
