A brief description of the routeBetween Krāslava and Daugavpils, the Daugava River twists and curves through beautiful landscapes. The ancient river valley has cliffs of up to 40 metres in height on either side. From atop those cliffs, there are magnificent views. There are nature trails along the banks of the river in several places, there is a viewing tower, and information is available. The Daugava is a calm river, no rapids or obstacles. It is advisable to travel down the river after a heavy rain, because then the stream is quite powerful. Rubber boats and rafts should be avoided, as there can be very strong winds in the valley, and these make travel difficult. Boating down the Daugava can also start at Indrica or Piedruja. Between Krāslava and Daugavpils, the Daugava River is located in the "Curves of Daugava" nature park and in the protected territory of the region. Note: When you travel down the river, you must have your passport along, because the river flows through Latvia’s border zone.
