Hiking along the Baltic sea coast
Latvia (7 days)In the beginning of this tour you will spend 2 days in Riga - the capital of Latvia and then go for a 5 days trekking tour along the Baltic Sea coast and the shores of the Riga gulf. You will experience different coastal landscapes, from white sand beaches, coastal meadows, dunes with pine trees to very steep banks up to 10-15 meters high and stony beaches. The route will lead you through ethnographic fishermen villages as well as two important port towns - Liepāja and Ventspils, an the nice small town Kuldiga in the middle of Courland. You will visit two national parks - Slītere and Ķemeri and hike also in two bogs on hiking trails. Read more about protected nature areas en route in the description below. |

1st day / ArrivalIndividual arrival in Riga.Optional: Private transfer from airport to the hotel. Overnight in hotel in Riga. |

2nd day / Riga - LiepājaBreakfast.Meeting with the guide at the hotel. City tour in the Old Riga – the 800 year old Hanseatic town with one of the most beautiful medieval town centres in Europe, overlooking the river Daugava. The Blackheads house, the St. Peters church, the Riga Dome Cathedral and the Art Noveau buildings. In the afternoon bus transfer: Rīga – Liepāja (~250 km) On the way Hiking on Cenas Tīrelis - along a hiking trail in the bog (~5km, 2h). Sightseeing of Liepāja – one of Latvia’s biggest cities, famous for its nice beach, music festivals and night-life. Overnight in the hotel in Liepāja. |

3rd day / Liepāja - Nida - PāvilostaBreakfast.Bus transfer: Liepāja – Nida (~65 km) Hiking: Nida - Pape (~ 8 km, 2.5 h) Hiking along the Baltic Sea coastal area, which was a restricted area in the Soviet times. Visiting the Pape lake nature park (the former sea lagoon), where there is a great diversity of nesting birds. There is a specially marked nature trail along the lake, leading through some ethnographic fishermen villages. Possibility to visit the “Nature house”, the bird observation tower, and to watch wild horses in enclosed area. Bus transfer: Pape – Liepāja – Pāvilosta (~110 km) Walk in the former fishermen village Pāvilosta till the Grey Dune with viewing tower. Overnight in guest house in Pāvilosta. |

4th day / Pāvilosta - JūrkalneBreakfast.Bus transfer: Pāvilosta - Ulmale Hiking: Ulmale - Jūrkalne (~12 km) From Pāvilosta, which is a traditional fishermen town, hiking in one of the most beautiful parts of the Baltic sea coast where there are 10-15 m high steep sandy banks. These beaches are quiet and nice for swimming. In Jūrkalne, there is a possibility to see the “blue” cows – a very rare cow species, which are typical for that region. In the afternoon bus transfer: Jūrkalne – Kuldīga (~45 km) Sightseeing of Kuldiga – the ancient town of Courland (Kurzeme) with the widest waterfall in Europe (240 m). Visiting the Riežupe sand caves. Bus transfer: Kuldīga - Jūrkalne Overnight in a guest house in Jūrkalne. |

5th day / Jūrkalne - Ventspils - Kolka - RojaBreakfast.Bus transfer: Jūrkalne – Ventspils (~45 km) Sightseeing of Ventspils. Bus transfer: Ventspils - Šlītere lighthouse (~ 70 km) Hiking in the Šlītere National Park on a special hiking trail near the Šlītere lighthouse. (1,5 km, 0.5 h) Bus transfer: Šlītere lighthouse - Mazirbe (~ 10 km) Hiking: Mazirbe – Košrags – Pitrags - Saunags (~10 km) Hiking through the Šlītere National park through old fishermen villages that were once populated by the Livs - an ancient Finno-Ugric tribe. There is still a small community of the Livs in Latvia and Estonia. In these villages one can see the traditional wooden buildings and old fishing boats. Bus transfer: Saunags – Kolka – Roja Visiting the Kolka horn where the Baltic Sea meets the Riga gulf and the waves are crossing and building a long dune. Stop in Pūrciems – hiking on a special hiking trail over the White Dune (1km, 0.5h). Overnight in a guest house near Roja town. |

6th day / Roja - RigaBreakfast.Hiking: Roja – Kaltene (~8 km) The route leads along the coasts of the Rīga gulf through a very attractive stony area – the beach is studded with many stones of different size. Bus transfer: Kaltene – Ķemeri Stop in Mērsrags - possibility to visit the bird observation tower. Hiking in the Ķemeri national park (~3 km) along a hiking trail in the bog. Bus transfer: Jūrmala – Rīga. On the way Stop in the resort town Jūrmala. End of guide services. Overnight in the hoteli in Riga. |
